There have been various technologies that rework coal for delivery methods. Typically, coal is pulverized and blown into a furnace for complete combustion.  When there are concerns over exceeding Carbon Dioxide emissions, there is always the possibility of co-firing with torrefacted wood be blown into the furnace at the same time.  When there is difficulty at getting to deep, underground seams there is the possibility of starting a fire deep below the earth’s surface while adding oxygen and then capturing the syngas that is created for later burning. Also, it is possible to mix coal with liquids and make a flowing substance out of it for easier delivery of the BTUs through flow.  There has been talk for easy transport and low costs on using liquids from coal for the Fairbank’s Fort Wainright. Time will tell whether this is a fossil fuel option that will provide cheat BTU’s.
